International Islamic University Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur/Gombak

After almost 4 decades of existence, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) remains dear to her raison d’etre and philosophy of education that are mirrored in its Vision and Missions. IIUM sees education as a mean to impart knowledge so that human beings can understand their positions on earth, their relationships with the Creator, their roles and functions, and the need to achieve harmony with their own being, their communities, and their environment.

In its reimagined futures, IIUM is determined to depart itself from the conventional model of university education that is confined mainly to material knowledge for material gains, and where the curriculum is fragmented thus losing its meaning and purpose in the universal context.

Therefore, IIUM shall not merely be a seat of learning but an educational institution leading towards personality and character development of its staff and students at par with the Islamic way. IIUM will continue to champion the integration of knowledge, imbued with values and spiritual development under the aegis of the belief system of Islam.

The uniqueness of the IIUM model, with its integrated curriculum and wide-ranging programmes of holistic higher education, has earned the admiration of many renowned international Muslim scholars and leaders as well as other scholars and organisations the world over. This is because education at IIUM includes a special dimension: IIUM strives not merely for excellence in the academic sense, but for the development of balanced personalities imbued with values and culture, and ready to face the challenges of the Century to come.

Extreme climate change has caused many problems in human life in this world. The issues of flooding, caused by rising sea levels, on the one hand, and drought and lack of clean water, on the other hand, have become a global discussion that requires comprehensive handling. The technical aspects are common discussions to handle this problem, but in fact, this problem also needs to be seen from an ethical perspective in viewing the problem. In my opinion, ethical education from a religious and spiritual perspective is also significant to discuss. Therefore, dialogue, cooperation, and networking between religious communities should become possible topics to discuss.
